Skull mask
This skull mask is heavily inspired by movie and videogame portrayals of skulls. I wanted to make a hyper-realistic skull mask that could be worn without straps or velcro. My mask has been sculpted from Monster clay and then a resin copy produced.
I started by making a head form by wrapping my head in tin foil and duct tape. After escaping my tin foil prison, I filled the form with expanding foam. Once the head form was complete, I began sculpting a skull over top with Monster Clay.
After getting the general shape locked in I went back in and added details. I bought some resin dental implants to add teeth. I used a variety of wire tools to add small scratches and imperfections to the surface of the mask. I also added small dents and bumps to replicate the texture of bone.
After I was done sculpting I created a silicone mold. I used Rebound 25 to create several layers of silicone over the mask. Once the silicone had cured I created an over-mold with plaster strips.
Once my mold was complete I demolded the mask. Unfortunately, I lost a few teeth in the process.
Now that the mold was complete I could start casting my mask with SmoothCast 300. As I added layers I tinted the resin to make it easier to see the thins spots.
After casting I began to clean up the cast and cut the jaw free.
Once everything was cleaned up and the cast looked perfect, I began to weather the mask. Using a combination of browns, blacks, yellow, and orange I made the mask look like old bone.
Once I was done painting I began work on the crown. I drew out a template then cut it out of EVA foam. I used several different thicknesses layered together to add texture and relief. I also added structure into the foam with wire. The wire was also used to add more details.
